Port Orford

Port Orford view from rest area                                                                                           working port

This actual working port on the southern Oregon coast is surrounded by a tiny undiscovered town called Port Orford.  Most of the residents are fishermen and their families, with a good sprinkling of retirees of late.   A few small motels, a couple of campgrounds, a handful of restaurants, a gift shop or two, hardware stores, junk shops, and of course, antique stores.  Not a lot of frills.
Yet you may never forget the sight of rounding that corner and seeing the cove leading to the open ocean at the south end of the village.  Certainly some of the most beautiful scenery you may ever see is in this little town.  It is here that you will find a great place to pull over and enjoy the view.  Clean modern restrooms and a little park for the traveler, the perfect overlook for this  breathtaking cove is at the south end of Port Orford and this unlikely park is a great place to stop for a rest on your journey up the coast.

While you are here, sample the local fare, and stop in at the few shops that do make Port Orford their home, some of them are quite interesting and have lovely pieces to help you remember your trip.  Buy fresh caught sea food at the working port, eat in a local restaurant to sample the local catch. Do shop at the small local gift stores, they can give you some pleasant local gossip and history!   Please tell them that Wild Coast Vacations sent you!

Many variety of sea life live at the base of the Port Orford heads.   These creatures (including star fish) live in the salty pools left as the tide flows in and out around the rocks of the ocean edge.   Please do not disturb these valuable and beautiful creatures, but carefully view them in their habitat from a polite distance.
