Backyard Whale!
MAY IS WHALE WATCHING MONTH, COME AND SEE!
Where else can you live and see a whale
in your backyard? The Whales are here!
I saw six whales yesterday playing not more than
200 feet from the shore!

I am proud to say that I live in such a place (Oregon coast).
This is a photo I took of a Gray Whale
peeping from the water, in my "backyard" on May 10, 2005.
(That is his nose and face you see)
I had actually
been watching whales every day during the
month of May (the best time to see them)
and I have seen many whales. They
pass within 200 feet of the shore many mornings around 8 a.m.,
and many evenings, around 3 pm
or later.
I was thrilled to get this photo, because for three days in
a row I happened to
see whales
playing in my "backyard", with tails, and fins, and heads showing.
But
alas, by the time I located
the camera, ran to the back deck, turned on the camera, and aimed, I get
nothing
more of this
glorious display. Finally, I captured a shot of the
whale who smiles at me
as
he passes my shore,
there on that horizon (actually just off the beach) by my back door.
I am happy to report that my neighbors have become accustomed to my
squeals of delight on
whale sightings, and no longer look out to see who is being tortured. This
is a good thing!
